Personal essay and memoir are the cornerstones of creative nonfiction and are, by definition, concerned with telling the truth. But what if your story doesn’t sound believable? What if your life events appear implausible? What if your truth doesn’t look like other people’s truth? Through the presenter’s experience with her own memoir, this session will explore ways to tell your story while still adhering to the norms of creative nonfiction. Playing with scene, prose, poetry, point of view, and other techniques can give the reader space in which to understand your truth—even if they don’t believe it.
