program and tote bag

We’re still finalizing the 2019 schedule for our annual creative nonfiction writing conference, HippoCamp, but since registration opens this Friday, Feb. 1,  we thought we’d share some of what you can expect this summer!

The days and times for sessions will be set up as we finalize confirmations; look for a first draft of the schedule by mid-February.

Speaker bios and full session details will come with the release of the full schedule. In the meantime, here’s a look at confirmed speakers and session titles — who you can see and what you can learn at HippoCamp 2019!

Keynote & Featured Speakers

We’ll announce our headlining keynote speaker Friday, Feb. 1, and in later Feb. announce our opening speaker, and, in March, announce our closing speaker. Lots to reveal as the weeks go on!

Debut Author Readings & Panel Participants
Always a much-awaited conference event, these first-time CNF authors will read from their new or forthcoming work, and a moderated panel and audience Q&A will follow. Confirmed so far, with more on the way:

–Suzanne Farrell Smith, The Memory Sessions: A Memoir (Bucknell University Press, August 2019)

–Teresa Wong, Dear Scarlet: The Story of My Postpartum Depression (graphic memoir, Arsenal Pulp Press, April 2019)

Breakout & Flash Sessions – in no particular order & more TBA!
Full descriptions, bios, track, and suggested skill level available when full schedule is announced. This current list shown here is about 2/3 of the sessions so far. What we love about this line-up so far is that it’s almost half made up of FIRST-TIME HippoCamp presenters! Plus, some returning presenters, including some of the most highly rated speakers from years past.

(And, if you’re new to HippoCamp, visit the About Page (and the “2019 Schedule At-a-Glance” tab) to see a sample run-down of the flow of the conference)

Pre-conference Generative Workshops – optional add-on (More TBA!)

“Drawing for Writers” – Rebecca Fish Ewan
Based on her popular and highly rated 2018 HippoCamp breakout session, Doodling for Wordies, this expanded, hands-on session will show writers how drawing can help with creativity — full description to come soon!

“The Creative Survival Handbook” – Rae Pagliarulo
When we’re juggling careers, families, and other mounting obligations along with our writing lives, how can we as creative people take care of ourselves and stay motivated? In this workshop, we will brainstorm different creative survival and self-care techniques that are low-barrier and highly effective, and create accordion-style “creative survival” handbooks to remind ourselves of what’s really important. This method will allow writers to tap into the visual and verbal facets of their creativity, identify tips and tricks to help us get unstuck, and focus on self-care and survival habits that will keep us moving towards our dreams and goals.

TICKETS ON SALE SOON

Registration opens Friday, Feb. 1. Those who register by Feb. 14 will be entered to win one of three complimentary passes to one of our pre-conference workshops!
